Oahu's Best Greens
Ala Wai Golf Course. One of the most popular of the island's facilities is on Waikiki's mauka (toward the mountains) end, across the Ala Wai Canal. It's par-70 on 6,424 yards and has a pro shop and a restaurant. The waiting list is long, so if you plan to play, call the minute you land. 404 Kapahulu Ave., Waikiki, PHONE: 808/733-7387. Olomana Golf Links. This par-72, 6,326-yard course features hills and some interesting water hazards, not to mention a backdrop of the sheer cliffs of the Ko'olau Mountains.
Mililani Golf Club. The tree-lined greens at this par-72, 6,455-yard course afford magnificent views of the surrounding Ko'olau and Wai'anae mountain ranges.
Luana Hills Country Club. The front 9
of this Peter and Perry Dye-designed 18-hole, par-72 course is carved into the slopes of Mount Olomana.
Ko'olau Golf Club. This 18-hole, par-72 course on O'ahu's windward side in Kaneohe is officially rated by the United States Golf Association as the most difficult golf course in the country. Up for the challenge?
Coral Creek Golf Course. Located on the 'Ewa Beach plains, about 40 minutes from Waikiki, this 18-hole, 6,808-yard, par-72 course offers wind challenges, ravines, coral rock formations, and lakes. Club rental is available.
Hawai'i Kai Championship Course. Advance reservations are recommended at this 18-hole, 6,222-yard course and the neighboring 18-hole, 2,386-yard Hawaii Kai Executive Course. 8902 Kalanianaole Hwy., Honolulu, PHONE: 808/395-2358. Hawai'i Prince Golf Club. This 27-hole course welcomes visiting players. 91-1200 Ft. Weaver Rd., 'Ewa Beach, PHONE: 808/944-4567. COST: Greens fee $90 guests, $135 nonguests, cart included.
Kahuku Golf Course. The 9-hole walking-only course is played more by locals than by visitors. Kahuku, PHONE: 808/293-5842. COST: Greens fee $20 nonresidents; hand-cart rental $4.
Ko Olina Golf Club. Affiliated with the Ihilani Resort is this club on Oahu's west side.
