Kalaupapa National Historical Park

 

Kalaupapa National Historical Park is a United States National Historic Park located in Kalaupapa, Hawaii i on the Hawaiian island of Molokai . Coextensive with Kalawao County, Hawaii , it was established by The United States National Park Service in 1980 to preserve the cultural and physical arrangements of the two colonies of lepers on the island of Molokai .

Two tragedies occurred on the Kalaupapa Peninsula on the north shore of the island of Molokai, the first being the displacement of indigenous people in 1865 and 1895, the second was the compulsory isolation of sick people


 
in this remote place from 1866 until 1969.

The displacement of Native Hawaiian residents have cut ties and cultural associations than previous generations had established with the aina of (ground) for 900 years. Second, the rulemaking isolation, first in Kalawao and then to Kalaupapa , led to wider society through dislocations as Hawaiian kingdom, and later the Territory of Hawaii tried to control leprosy (also known as Hansen's disease), a disease many fear, by putting force patients to the peninsula of isolation. The impact of both the broken connections with the `aina and of family members" lost "to Kalaupapa are still felt in Hawaii today.

The Kalaupapa National Historic Park, established in 1980, preserves the physical arrangements for these stories. Within its boundaries are the rules of Hansen's disease historic Kalaupapa and Kalawao. The community of Kalaupapa, the leeward side of Kalaupapa Peninsula, is still home for many patients of Hansen's disease survivors, whose memories and experiences are loved.
