Kukui Trail in Waimea Canyon

The Kukui Trail leads deep down into the Waimea Canyon to the Waimea River. This nearly 4 hours and 5 miles long hike, it has it all: Nice views show the canyon in all its Farbenfrohlichkeit. But) Note: The Ascent (= return path is steep and can be very slippery after rains. Check with the Kokee Museum to see if the weather permits the commission.

The entrance is located on Highway 550 between the milestones, 8 and 9 On the right side before the Emergency pillar is down into the canyon. Here are also signs that facilitate the identification of entry.

One first comes on the Illiau Nature Loop, which

then branches off into the Kukui Trail. We always keep us on the right and soon come to a koa forest. Here the trail becomes steeper and more slippery. It goes through numerous switchbacks along dusty roads (when it is not raining) down. After about 10 minutes walking time one has for the first time a clear view of the canyon.

After about 2.4 kilometers you reach the lower forest zone and the road is narrow and runs through several holes and roots downward. Eventually, we see giant agave plants, and soon comes the Shelter of Wiliwili camp. From here you can already hear the Waimea River.

Here, actually ends the Kukui Trail, and you can start again with the return. When you breath, and now has more time, I would recommend a slightly longer path in the direction Koiae Canyon Trail. The stream here flows Koaie namely the Waimea River.

In the ensuing street you turn left (right is towards Waimea and coast), crossing a dried river bed.

Now to watch out for and pass a 50 m wide rock face. Then we turn left from the river to a narrow passage occurs in which one can cross the river. " Shortly thereafter, shall notify the canyon and it has views of the wildest rock formations. From here you turn around again and takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours for the climb.
