Researchers Say Hawaii Reefs Contribute to Global Warming

Researchers at the University of Hawaii say coral reefs in Hawaii are Contributing to global warming, producing carbon dioxide when they calcify by building skeletons.

U.S. oceanographer Fred Mankenzie says other studies have shown that burning fossil fuels and deforestation put about eight billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere each year.

About two billion tons are carbon are taken up by the open ocean.

But Mackenzie says scientists have not known what happens in coastal zones.

Research oceanographer Eric De Carlo says scientists studying Kaneohe Bay and Enchanted Lake on Oahu and Hilo Bay found that all three are releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and not

absorbing it like the ocean.
