Sugar Museum
The sugar industry has been the hub of Maui's economy during the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, Maui still produces 10% of the sugar cane used by the United States.
Thousands of immigrants from countries like Japan, China, Korea, Puerto Rico, Philippines, Russia and Scandinavia, were recruited to Maui to work in the plantations of sugar cane. This immigration has created the diverse cultural mix that found today in Hawaii.
The Sugar Museum (full name: Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum) offers an exhibition on this period. Photos, articles and galleries, you will learn more about the history of immigrants came to work in Maui, and also on the sugar industry.
