The Invasion.

At a time when the ships Cook reached the Hawaiian Islands, surfing, as a symbiosis of art, sports and religion, has reached its peak and the fact that so superficially described in his diaries, haole, was actually the top surfing Polynesia.

After the publication of reports on the Cook expedition, rushed to Hawaii to other ships, which brought more and more adventurers, runaway convicts, ruined businessmen, missionaries and other desperadoes. The white men brought with them technology, languages, new faith, and in addition the disease, crime and all other vices, accumulated over thousands of "civilized society". That was another beginning of the

end of one of the unique cultures on earth.

The first Christian missionaries arrived in Hawaii Calvinists about in 1820 from New England. They immediately began to actively enforce their faith in God and His only son Jesus Christ, condemning and denying everything that belonged to the age-old Hawaiian culture. Calvinists planted to Hawaiians "decently dressed," learned to read, worked hard, prayed and did not indulge in entertainment. Surfing is also considered a distraction and naturally not welcomed. Those who knew Hawaii before, and I saw what happened afterwards, accusing the missionaries in the destruction of a unique Polynesian culture, and that many of the good and the good side of the livelihood have been destroyed, including a surfing contest.

From the memoirs of one of the travelers who visited Hawaii in 1838:

"Changes were well-known practices, including almost all athletic competition - swimming, as a surfboard, and without it, dancing, wrestling, javelin, etc. All these games are declared contrary to the fundamental principles of Calvinism, and were banned. There were Is the right to ban missionaries this? I'm sure they meant it strongly, because it prohibited what themselves are not denied. Nevertheless, in public, they branded everything from indigenous cultures, as contrary to the laws of God. Skillfully skill in sermons and providing "compelling evidence" from the Bible, the missionaries tried to convince the credulous natives that awaits them eternal life in heaven, if they abandon their laws in favor of their religion. and impressionable and trusting by nature Hawaiians terminated their customs, which " as it turned out, were so "dangerous" for their souls. "

But the words of one of the most ardent defenders of the missionary work of those times:

"Cancellation and termination of surfing, in a developing civilization, should have a positive impact on the development of such a thing as modesty, industry and religion, and without doubt the missionaries have made good progress in this field."

Religion, industry and modesty were the main foundations of belief missionaries Calvinists. They are very badly treated and otherwise prohibit revealing clothing, entertainment, and close relationships between women and men. In his book, tells of life in Hawaii, one of the priests who lived in Hawaii, wrote: "It is interesting to a foreigner to visit the southern part of the island, in the days when there is a big surf wave and watch some local residents who are surfing. This is a very attractive for them and full of wild excitement. I can not accept this, but believe that many years before civilization, it was necessary, but now denigrate themselves, afford such entertainment as surfing all the time, is unacceptable and dangerous "(apparently he had in mind that surfers will not be allowed to Calvinist heaven :-)

White men and Hawaiian culture is experiencing. Literally for the first 20 years of 18 century, Hawaii had changed forever. In 1819, less than 50 years after the expedition Cook, Iloilo, son and heir of the legendary King publicly Kamehamela I sat down to eat at a table with his mother and other women of the royal family. There is one table of women in Hawaii have been taboo since the birth of the world, but Iloilo swung foundations and quickened the dominant culture of white people. His act was the signal throughout Hawaii that the old system of laws no longer valid, which put a complete end to the system taboo. Kaput system has collapsed and it was forgotten much of the cultural heritage of Polynesia, including the importance of surfing. Now the common people could not be afraid to cross in any areas with representatives of royal blood. Moreover, he could easily climb the career or higher to withdraw the Lihue. Also, gradually lost importance, and then was forgotten altogether Festival Manahawkin - a great annual celebration in honor of the god Loon, where to surf and play an important role.

Despite the speed with which the Hawaiian culture and traditions in oblivion, was that killed even faster: Hawaiians themselves. Whatever resistant and hardy in relation to the natural environment, Hawaiians were powerless to new diseases, alcohol and deceit, brought to Hawaii expatriates. Since visiting the Cook Hawaii, to the early 20 the century the population of native Hawaiians declined from 800.000 to 40.000 people. Honolulu became the largest city in Hawaii, but only one in four was a native of here.

Haole greatly accelerated the pace of life in Hawaii. In conditions of constant competition and struggle for survival and follow the new rules imposed by the Calvinists, Native Hawaiian had no time for surfing. Surfing died in Hawaii, he was forgotten. Forgotten as well as everything else that belonged to the Polynesian culture. Over 125 years of expansion haole in Hawaii, Franks subjugated everything that belonged to Hawaiian: their Gods, their culture, their magic, their land and even their lives. In 1893, conspiring planters and businessmen, with the support of the U.S. armed forces and religious fanatics committed a coup and overthrew the ruling on the law of the royal dynasty. By that time, Native Hawaiians were not more than 40 thousand, and this small handful could not provide any effective resistance. Hawaiians tried to protect their rights, defending the independence, but when Queen Liliuokalani tried to restore power to the Native Hawaiian, haole overthrowing it and put in jail. In 1898, the illegal government, established by foreigners annexed the territory of Hawaii to the U.S..

By the beginning of 20 century surfing virtually disappeared from the Hawaiian Islands. Mainly engaged in surfing Kalehuawehe, on the southern coast of Oahu, and a few people on the spot Maui, Kauai and other islands. At times, even some the interested foreigner could afford to ride the wave - "sit on top of the world" and then tell everyone about his bravery. One of these was the famous writer Mark Twain, who came to Hawaii in 1866. He tried surfing and memories can be read in his work "Roughing It": "Once I tried to stand on a surfboard. It seems to be correctly positioned the board and picked the right time to start. But my body could not keep his balance and fell. Bulletin reached the shore for a quarter of a second without any cargo, and I at the same time reached the bottom, with a cargo of several liters of seawater. "

Surfing, which captivated the hearts of thousands, was now a rarity.
