Waikanaloa Cave
Waikanaloa Cave is one of Kauai's most easily accessible wonders. Located nearly at the end of the North Shore's Highway 560, it can be seen right next to the road. The photograph below doesn't show it, but the water is amazingly blue...and cold. Although a freshwater cave, the water levels are governed by the tides.
Not too visible in this photo, there is an arched opening at the back of the cave that leads to an eerily beautiful inner world. The best way to visit is by kayak. For those of us old enough to have been enthralled as kids with the '60s film Journey To The Center Of The Earth,
To reach Waikanaloa Cave --and its sister Waikapala`e Cave just a short walk uphill drive west along Highway 560 on Kauai's North Shore. You will be heading in the direction of end-of-the-road Ke`e Beach, which is located at MM (mile marker) 10.
Right before you reach the cave, you will cross Limahuli Stream --which flows right over the road!-- and then Waikanaloa Cave will appear immediately on your left / mauka.
