Waimea Canyon

 

It is that Kauai is the largest canyon in the Pacific. The canyons are formed by a process of erosion, but that of Waimea has also been created by the collapse of a volcano that gave birth to Kauai (the oldest island of the archipelago of Hawaii). The Waimea River has subsequently caused an incision, the rest of the canyon has continued to be carved by rivers and floods from the summit of Mount Wai'ale'ale, there are several million years.

With a length of 16 km and a depth of 900 meters, Waimea Canyon offers spectacular panoramic views, plus many tracks for hikers.

Just after mile marker # 10, there


 
is the great observatory of Waimea, where you can park and access to different viewpoints on the canyon. About 5 km away, the Observatory Pu'u Hinahina offers another view of canyon more than one view on Ni'ihau, neighboring island of Kauai and is inaccessible to the public.

Other observatories, located after mile marker # 23, you will still see Ni'ihau. At the vantage point of Pu'u Ka Pele, you'll see waterfalls Waipo'o Falls. The falls are especially evident after heavy rainfall.

If you want to walk a little and you hear the Koke's Natural History Museum is located after mile marker # 15. This museum features exhibits on plants, animals and insects of the region, plus maps. There is a restaurant and picnic tables, picnic nearby.

Among the most popular observatories, that of the Kalalau Valley, overlooking the Na Pali coast. The spectacle of colors created by the Light, clouds and the ocean is breathtaking. To get there, be run until the end of Highway 552, or Puu O Kila Road. There is another observatory overlooking the valley if you drive above the Pu'uo Kila lookout.

He must spend about 3 hours to make this trip without hiking. Consider making a refuel before entering the canyon (last station in Waimea).

At the top of the canyon, the temperature is less than plus or minus 5 degrees Celsius in the town of Waimea, so plan to bring warmer clothing. If you want to do hiking, check with the ranger station (ranger station) for maps. A permit is required to go on some tracks.
